When you’re exploring mental health care, it’s helpful to understand your options. A common question is: “What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?”

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication and may also offer therapy. A therapist offers talk therapy but does not prescribe medications.

Empathy Therapy is a small, boutique, 100% telehealth practice — and Dr. Mark Choflá, our founder and sole provider, brings something rare to the table: a medical doctor who also offers therapy.

As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Dr. Chofla completed medical school and residency, where he gained deep knowledge of the body and brain. During his medical residency, he realized the value of integrated care and pursued additional training in psychotherapy — a decision that continues to shape his care today.

This means that instead of being referred out for therapy, you can receive both medication support and talk therapy from one highly trained provider.

Why this matters:

  • Your care is streamlined and consistent.

  • Your mental health is treated through a whole-person lens.

  • You have access to compassionate support that draws from both medical and therapeutic knowledge.

Empathy Therapy provides care across California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Arizona, and New York — entirely by telehealth.
